It was a wholesale produce market much like Covent Garden with piles of vegetables and joints of meat hanging about. it was intended for retailers to fequent rather than shoppers per say. The City markets were eventually moved to the viaduct quarter in 1915 where Turners & growers were until about ten years ago. I think this was essentially Auckland's first shopping mall.
