I wonder if you could enlighten me - the Carder Bros were my great uncles. My father said the Carder family had the first pottery works in Auckland and they were on the site in Pompallier Tce Ponsonby where the rugby club now stands (or stood?)
I am doing a project for my school about the potteries, I was wondering, seeing as they were your great uncles, would I be able to ask you a few questions over email? Thanks!
Hey there late reply but did you know your great uncles have a abandoned boat called the tangariro? Heres a link to a post about it http://yardyyardyyardy.blogspot.co.nz/2011/10/what-hulk-on-herald-island.html
Well, Auckland Council Archives have them as being at Pompallier in 1883. Have a look at the City of Auckland 1908 map on the Council Archives website, and you'll see the large single-storey wooden complex that was Carder's in Ponsonby.
As for the first pottery in Auckland, that honour would most likely go to George Boyd, for his Newton Brick and Pottery Works, advertising in September 1863. Joshua Carder started up during 1866 in West Auckland.
