This was a surprise find. I don't know anything about these clay pavers outside Titirangi Library (if anyone has further info on them -- please let me know) but one thing I do know: there are dozens of them, and each one is a miniature work of art.
Here are just some highlights. There are way too many to put on the blog in their entirity. I found them all quite amazing.
Do go have a look, if ever you're in the vicinity.
Aren't they just gorgeous. The kids and I marvel at them whenever we go to story time.
ReplyDeleteThere are also mosaic pavers at the Margan Ave duck ponds in New Lynn, each one is made with Crown Lynn bits.

Ah, ha! Thank you, Cat B -- I'll go look for those mosaic pavers at Margan. Sounds like the ones at the New Lynn Community Centre. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous! I love the potter! Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the street art... they truly are little gems and we get so busy in our day to day life we often just skim the surface of what is around us and don't truly look deeper to see these things.
Can't remember if i've shared this, but we went to Birkenhead a few weeks back and i spotted [hard not to!] these 'pansies' on the wall of the RSA

ReplyDeleteOh, those pansies are fabulous, Sandy! Whereabouts in Birkenhead is that?
ReplyDeleteAren't they! It's around 22 Makoia Road, not far from the postshop. Here's a google link, you can see it to the right of the picture

It just so happens I'll be in Birkenhead tomorrow -- a little stroll down Mokoia Road is in order, methinks ... ;-)
ReplyDeleteCheers, Sandy!

ReplyDeleteDid you make it there? They are rather spectacular in reality :-)
Cheers
Not yet, Sandy. It's on my "must see 'cause Sandy says they're cool" list, next time I've in the vicinity. I'll get to 'em. No worries.
ReplyDeleteA comment from Ev of New Zealand Pottery (Blogger is making it a bit difficult top poast commwents right now, it seems).
ReplyDelete"Hi Lisa,
I was searching around your site yesterday having a great time indeed when I came across your blog about the Titirangi Library pavers. I tried to leave a comment about this but I couldn't get it to go through. So I will fill you in from here.
Tanya Wilkinson who worked for the Waitakere Council approached Titirangi Potters about taking a Community Tile Workshop for this project. Two of us accepted the challenge. We worked hard as they wanted 350 tiles, but we had the best time ever! We made the terracotta tiles and supplied the coloured slips and let them paint whatever they wanted. People came from all over the area and painted the most wonderful artwork. It was a real highlight in my potting career - such a joy and pleasure..... it was covered by the Western Leader.
Cheers Ev"
