Update on the signalbox murals

Previous post here.

The update is: the vanishing signalbox murals won't be replaced. Something about the dark colour played havoc with the controls inside, so as the contractors work their way through, the murals are going and they'll stay gone, according to what came out at tonight's Avondale Community Board meeting. Unfortunate, but -- that's life.

  1. That is a shame. Pity they can't paint something else in lighter colours, just to keep the boxes looking pretty.

  2. I agree, Marita. I've seen more boxes around the city now, similarly stripped of the artworks. A shame.

  3. A fairly flimsy reason, I'd have thought. More likely "council-speak" for "too hard" and "can't be bothered". As Marita said, if dark colours are a problem, use lighter ones! And why is it you find boxes holding all manner of electronic controls all over town painted in dark colours?

  4. I just don't know, Phil -- except that some of those may not be traffic signal boxes (the delicate ones), but telephone cable boxes instead. Those, apparently, have no problem with dark colours -- but you need to ask permission to paint on them as they aren't public property.
