Discarded wood at Avondale Train Station

Rounding off July: I find myself intrigued by three hunks of wood bolted together and left at the side of the eastbound track at Avondale Train Station.

I can't quite make out what these pieces were once part of. Any suggestions, gratefully appreciated.

  1. It almost looks like the buffers you see at the end of a rail line, at the terminus, but I'm assuming there's none near there?
    Andrew will probably know ;)

  2. I think it's a buffer as well. I can soon pop down the road to the old Maungaturoto Line there and have a look and see if there is anything similar. I'd say Jayne is right. I'd be interest to see what Andrew does say about it.

  3. I can't recall Avondale having any buffers, but that's a darn good suggestion.
